When I see this, I remember the Creative Screenwriting Magazine podcast by Jeff Goldsmith where he interviewed Andrew Stanton from Pixar (Direct Audio Link).
To quote a piece in the middle on Luxo Jr.’s influence on Wall·e (starting at 33:24), Andrew says:
“It’s this cute animate thing that can’t fully express itself, and you can’t stop yourself from wanting to invest in it.”
